Methodology
Data Collection
HikeWize compiles trail data from multiple authoritative sources:
- National Park Service (NPS) — Official trail data, park boundaries, and access information for national parks and monuments.
- U.S. Forest Service — Trail inventories for national forests and grasslands.
- State Park Systems — Trail data from state park agencies across all 50 states.
- Established Trail Databases — User-contributed data including ratings, reviews, and condition reports from major trail platforms.
Difficulty Rating System
Our three-tier difficulty rating (Easy, Moderate, Hard) considers:
- Distance — Total trail length in miles
- Elevation Gain — Total vertical feet gained
- Terrain — Surface type, obstacles, and exposure
- Navigation — Trail marking quality and routefinding requirements
Easy trails are generally under 5 miles with less than 500 feet of gain. Moderate trails range from 4-10 miles with 500-2,000 feet. Hard trails exceed 10 miles or have more than 2,000 feet of gain, often with challenging terrain.
Trail Statistics
Each trail profile includes distance, elevation gain, trail type (loop, out-and-back, point-to-point), surface type, dog policy, user ratings, review counts, and recommended seasons. State and park summaries aggregate individual trail data.
Updates
We review and update our database regularly to incorporate new trails, changed conditions, and updated access policies. However, trail conditions change rapidly and our data may not reflect the current state of any given trail.
Limitations
Our data represents compiled trail statistics, not real-time conditions. Always verify current trail status, closures, and conditions with the managing agency before hiking. Weather, seasonal closures, and maintenance can significantly alter trail accessibility and difficulty.
